The Southern Coast of New South Wale is at the core of Tuesday’s crisis, where up to 150mm of rainfall is expected.

The tens of thousands of Australians whose homes are susceptible to risk of flooding are in distress as they wait for the downpours to subside. The emergency warning extends from Brisbane and the Gold Coast to the NSW coast, and out into Western Sydney.

The Southern Coast of NSW is at the core of Tuesday’s crisis, where up to 150mm of rainfall is expected.

The projected damage bill during days of highly destructive rainfall has surpassed the $2 billion mark and continues to increase, rapidly. Tuesday is considered “critical” when it comes to the severity of the devastation as two major weather systems are set to collide.

A trough on the NSW coast and that stretching across Australia is set to deliver unpredictable consequences. These are likely to cause havoc in the southeastern parts of Australia before clearing later on Wednesday.

According to the NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian, the event was “catastrophic” in size. She noted that State Emergency Services were on standby ready to assist.

“No matter how far away you might be or however isolated you may feel, help we will come to you,” she said.

“The fact that 15,000 people may have to be evacuated in the next 24 to 48 hours is a huge concern.” Residents living along the Colo River received an evacuation notice this morning.

As a result, nearly 500 people from 200 households had to leave their valuables and flee.

The SES is getting boats and helicopters ready to evacuate residents to safety where necessary.

Disaster relief payments are available for people in 38 council areas marked as natural disaster spots.
In essence, the residents of these areas qualify for federal emergency funding.

Adults are receiving at most $1000 while children get $400.

The council areas eligible include:

Blacktown, Blue Mountains, Campbelltown, Camden, Ku-ring-gai, Cumberland, Canterbury Bankstown, Hornsby, Fairfield, Hawkesbury, Inner West, Liverpool, Northern Beaches, Parramatta, Penrith, Cessnock, Sutherland, The Hills, Coffs Harbour, Dungog, Wollondilly, Bellingen, Armidale, Mid-Coast, Central Coast, Clarence Valley, Kempsey, Lake Macquarie City, Maitland City, Newcastle, Nambucca Valley, Port Macquarie-Hastings, Port Stephens, Tenterfield.
